Sofia, December 22 (BTA) - Bulgaria will participate in EuroVelo 13 - Europe's newest bicycle route which follows the old Iron Curtain trail. Deputy Minister of Economy Energy and Tourism Ivo Marinov and representatives of NGOs presented the project at BTA's Press Club Wednesday.

EuroVelo 13 aims to popularize the historical heritage from the Cold War and attract bicycle tourists to local nature and cultural attractions. The 7,000 km route stretches from the Barents Sea to pass through 20 European countries and end on the Black Sea coast.

The project is financed by the EC and provides measures for constructing and advertising the tour's last section. It extends over 1,700 km, starting at the Serbian - Romanian border and passing through Bulgaria's border regions with Serbia, Macedonia, Greece and Turkey, Kiril Kaloyanov, project coordinator from the Bulgarian Association for Alternative Tourism said. Dimiter Katsov from the EcoSociety Foundation said that a number of measures are to be taken to encourage the development of this type of tourism, such as providing traffic safety, comfort and attractions for the bicycle tourists.

Marinov said that his Ministry will initiate legislative changes which will provide for special bicyclist road markings on the republican road network, adding that bicycle tourism will be a priority for operational programme financing in the future programming period 2014-2020.
