Support by the EU

The European Parliament has called on EU member states to support a proposal to promote the 6,800 km route of the former Iron Curtain as a "tourist trail that would preserve the memory of the division of the continent, show how it has been overcome through peaceful European reunification, and promote a European identity."

On September 9, 2005 MEPs adopted a report on 'new perspectives and challenges for a sustainable European tourism,'containing details of the 'Iron Curtain Trail' initiative.

Since 2009, the EU budget comprises funding opportunities for which projects related to the Iron Curtain Trail are explicitly eligible. For more details, please check the section implementation and funding.
